The metaphors of betrayal project aims at exploring the metaphorical language produced in a publically available online discussion forum intended for survivors of psychopathic abuse. The primary goal is to use empirical data as the basis for describing the ways in which such survivors write about various aspects of their experience (sense of self, sense of other(s), road to recovery, etc.), and in this way shed light upon their underlying conceptualizations of abuse and recovery. Metaphor (both conventional and novel) is frequently used to talk about emotions and relationships, and the metaphors produced by abuse survivors can tell us something about their attitudes, feelings and needs that might otherwise remain obscure.
